Dismal Scientist

I held the poem to the light
to count its ribs, map its organs
and classify the correct species.

I placed it on a puddle
to measure its buoyancy
and time how long it took to sink.

I let it scurry in the wet yard
so I could measure its stride
as it returned to its cage.

I held it between thumb and forefinger
and exhaled with detachment to
observe the three dimensions I knew.

Once satisfied, I dropped it back
Into the shoebox of faceless numbers
To sit on its miracles and sigh.
